Daily intake recommended
EU Dietary Reference Values
In 2010 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), as one of the first authoritive bodies, has set up dietary rerefence values for EPA and DHA intake. Though critisized by not few lipid researchers for being on the rather low side, EFSA's official acknowledgement of long-chain omega-3's health benefits is an important step to raise public awareness for EPA/DHA deficiencies.
EU Dietary Reference Values
• Adults and children > 2 years: 250 mg EPA+DHA / day
• Pregnant and nursing mothers: + 100-200 mg DHA / day
• Infants 7 months - 2 years: 100 mg DHA / day
Various national health authorities and international organisations have also issued recommendations for daily EPA/DHA intake, suggesting higher figures:
- British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) Task Force: 1,250mg
- Health Council of the Netherlands: 450mg
- Norwegian Directorate of Health: 1,000mg
- International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL): 500mg
- American Heart Association (AHA): 1,000mg-4,000mg (for groups with high heart risk)
