Omega-3 for food
The human body can't make omega-3 fatty acids on its own, so they must be taken in from food or as supplements. However, the American Heart Association (AHA) says that 'increasing omega-3 fatty acid intake through foods is preferable'.
According to US studies, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are top of the list of diet deficiencies perceived by consumers. When shopping, they actively search for products fortified with tasteless and odourless omega-3 additives.
Producers such as Nestlé, Danone, Heinz and Tropicana have already adapted to this trend by introducing omega-3 enriched products.
As a result, the market for omega-3 enriched products (such as pastries, dairy products, drinks, cereals, fish and meat products) has grown significantly since 2001; the global market is expected to be worth 5 billion Euros in 2011.
