Why now?
Growing market with good opportunities
'Functional' foods are defined as providing health benefits beyond basic nutrition. They make up a rapidly growing market, which:
- was worth $30.7 billion in 2008
- is predicted to grow by 40% between 2009 and 2014.
In addition, 83% of consumers 'have expressed interest in products with added health benefits' (2008 International Food Information Council survey).
In terms of omega-3 fortified products, they:
- increased by 66% between 2006 and 2008 (Mintel's Global New Products Database)
- include more than 1,550 items, such as orange juice, cereal, bread and peanut butter.
Omega-3 now available free of taste and smell
For a long time, omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil were only suitable for capsule supplements because of their unattractive sensory profile.
However, neutral fish-derived omega-3 is now available completely free of taste or odour. As a result, fortifying foods does not have any negative impact on the sensory profile of the end product.
This is possible thanks to:
- high-quality raw materials (freshly extracted, stabilised and chilled)
- advanced refining technology, combined with a customised production process and expertise
- custom-designed stabilisation system
- innovative systems and technologies for adding the ingredient into the food manufacturing process
- low oxidation levels.
