What is omega-3?

 

Omega-3 is one of the two main groups of essential fatty acids (the other being omega-6). The human body can't make these on its own by synthetisation, so they must be ingested via food or by taking supplements.

These two groups of fatty acids are both needed for optimal health and very basic body functions – hence the 'essential'. However, a good balance is important to avoid the negative effects that too much omega-6 can have.

In particular, omega-3 fatty acids – obtained from animal-based or plant-based sources – have been shown to be vital for the human body's growth, development and ongoing good health, both physically and mentally.
